Closet Clean Out

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Dress (tucked into skirt) & Skirt -H&M, Shoes-Steve Madden, watch-Michael Kors
This other weekend I spent sometime making a dent in my closet. I swear I clean and organize it and then a few weeks later it's literally throwing up clothes all over me and into our spare room (as you can tell). I actually love organizing my closet; you get to see all your favorite friends again. I am in the middle of buying new organizing systems and once I get it perfect I will take new photos.

Here are ten tips to cleaning up your closet:

1. Organize by how you like to look for clothes. I like to look by the style (tops, skirts, etc), but you may like color.
2. Use all the same hangers. This will help your closet look more clean and consistent. I like white plastic for their price and they usually have styles with hooks and indents for your straps.
3. If you are like me and lack closet and storage space consider buying a rolling rack.
4. When getting rid of clothes think of the fit and quality of the garment. When was the last time you wore it? Is it too trendy? Does it work into your daily wardrobe? Is it a classic?
5. If you really can't decide on an item have someone take a picture and then decide.
6. Display your handbags and shoes as focal pieces. This will make them easy to spot and you'll appreciate them more.
7. Buy extra racks or hooks to install for all your belts, sashes, scarfs and hats.
8.  Find your favorite item and display it out facing you when you open the closet. That way you will always smile when you open your closet.
9. Start writing a list of all the things that are closet staples that are now going on your "Must Have" list (trench coat, blazer, white button down, pencil skirt, etc).
10. Have fun! Go down memory lane as you get rid of clothes that you use to to think were stylish and make room for all your new fabulous items!

Or even better, have Taylor come over and help you decide what to keep and what to get rid of! Seriously, having you there while I was cleaning out my closet months ago made the world of a difference! xoxo

Great tips! I like to go through my wardrobe to clean every season, but it only stays neat for a few weeks. I really need a proper clean out of it though. I always keep things I never wear.

I love the top you're wearing!

Funny enough, i did the exact same thing this weekend. I organised the whole of Saturday and Sunday, and i'm still not done, will continue this weekend!

Brianna said...

I do a lot of the same things you do in terms of closet organization. I have my shirts done based on color then sleeve length in each color. And I also only use white plastic hangers :)

Great look, Taylor...pretty pink with that b/w skirt..I love it! :) && your shoes are super cute...and I love how your did your hair in a simply pony..really pulls the look all together and doesn't make it too dressy! :)

As for organizing MY closet, I made a point to log on to easyclosets.com when my husband and I first moved into our new place, back in March. I had the same issue, where I was using spare bedrooms to keep my clothes. Now, I have my dream closet! It was so easy, you just log on and enter your dimensions of your closet and it comes up with a custom design, and you can even tweak it to reflect exactly what you want! It's great, and it was in-expensive. SO glad we did it!

I love cleaning out my closet as well. I try to do it a few times a season. I either bring the unwanted clothes to a consignment shop, donate them to charity, or swap them with my friends.

Christina said...

Awesome skirt/blouse combo. I just cleaned my closet. Buying a shoe organizer is the best investment I ever made. I am also slowly buying wooden hangers because I love the way they look, but they are more expensive so I pick them up every once in a while.

Heather said...

Great tips! I lined the back of my closet walls with those shoe organizers for my shoes, belts, wallets and small stuff like that.

I'll start off by saying I love your blouse/dress. The color is just so fun and goes greatly with your skin tone and lipstick! Second of all, I love your shoes! You know how to put together an outfit that looks fun, but at the same time looks modest and classy. I just love it and love following your blog! Keep up the great style, Chandler

AGGGHHH! I battle with my closet just about every week. I spend Sunday putting everything back into its place only to find a mess once again a week later. It's a vicious cycle! Thanks for the closet tips; I especially like the idea of seeing a favorite item every time I open my closet.

As for your outfit, I love romantic coral blouse paired with the black and white skirt. Whenever I try to tuck a dress into a skirt it results in unattractive bunches of fabric underneath the skirt. Any tricks to pass along?

Thanks for the tips! I am ashamed to admit that I have a handful of pieces from high school that I no longer wear but still keep from year to year. You've inspired me to give them the boot once and for all to make room for new things I love!

One of my favorite tips is to put desk dividers onto shelves to keep things organized (I'm queen of throwing purses or scarves into a pile). My favorite ones are from target, and have pockets on them - perfect for putting toiletries that I don't use every day!

Great list Taylor and I love how you made the dress into a top! I did a closet re-organization last year using Elfa (Container Store) shelving, racks, etc. and all Huggable Hanges from Joy Mangano (and some extras from Costco - Slimline Hangers). It's made a world of difference!

I split up sides for vintage and non vintage and find this so much easier for dressing each day depending on what I want to feel like. Luckily in Las Vegas we have extreme weather and like right now I know I wont wear anything with sleeves or any of my coats until late September. It makes it easy to put stuff away. Yet I still have a pile of laundry on my bedroom floor...must figure out how to make that disappear next
