Recently, one of my favorite blogs, The Cut, posted an article “We Are the Thinnest” by Amy Odell. She cites a report that New York is the thinnest state in the US. New York’s population is only 47% overweight, whereas the rest of the nation is 67% overweight. I’m not that surprised. Since NY is the fashion Mecca of the world it has an overabundance of style setters and style setter “wannabes” who bring down the average. What is surprising is how Odell leans towards thin fanaticism.
This post evoked uproar from its readers, many felt that Odell was out of line. One reader wrote:
This is sickening. No, not the models or whatever but this article saying how all that matters is being thin, etc. I don't know if it was meant to be sarcastic but shame on you, Amy Odell, for putting such bullshit out into the universe.”-CALVINSHOW
I think we all know that New York is cut throat and being thin is still extremely important to the fashion industry. So, I am not offended by Odell’s arrogance. It’s the truth. I just hope that the rest of the nation values health and fitness and not the fashion industry’s version.
