Chopped Broccoli Salad

People still look at my boyfriend and I sideways when we tell them how we eat. It's as if they think we're miserable and depressed because we eat healthy. However, it's just the opposite. We feel invigorated by eating fresh, healthy and natural foods. It also allows us to feel better about eating things that other people worry about. This broccoli salad is amazing and very healthy. However, a few of our friends worried about the bacon and carrots, "Aren't carrots high in sugar?" they ask. In our opinion carrots aren't what you should worry about. Even bacon is fine as long as you don't eat it everyday. I limit the amount of starch and sugar I eat and that gives room for things like bacon, bread, and frozen yogurt here and there.

This salad is great for lunch and lasts a few days. I recommend that you use fresh dill because it adds so much flavor.

I love Everyday Paleo - have you tried the Curried Meatballs yet? She just posted them last week but I've already made the recipe twice because my boyfriend and I loved it so much- you've got to try it!

(I've been lurking for a while now - it's really nice to find a style blogger who does CrossFit and eats like me - Thanks for the great posts!)

Congrats - you're awesome for eating healthy. We get it. Also, I enjoyed the FAQ section in which you say people are always asking you how you stay fit? Ahahahaha.....this seems to be nothing more to you than an outlet used to ease your insecurities.

Oh yum! I love broccoli and eat it almost everyday. Adding dill to it is a great idea. Thanks for all these healthy posts!

you know, if you microwave bacon (i know, it sounds disgusting, trust me on this one) it actually removes more fat than cooking it in a pan. we do it all the time and i actually like how it tastes better!

Taylor, I am not the original Anon, but I can try to shed some light on their comment.

The tone of your post (and others posts like this one) is pretty smug. The broccoli salad does look delish and I'd like to try it, but writing about how people are always talking about how fit or healthy you are is obnoxious. I strongly doubt (especially in California) that people are that shocked by your healthy lifestyle.

Hope this sheds some light on any negative reactions you get.

p.s. sharpen up on your writing and grammar skills if you are launching a online mag. yikes!

It's immature, childish, and over all very lame to post snarky comments anonymously. If you are going to take the time to comment on someone's blog, especially to be rude, you should own it. Grow up.

Taylor, you rock! :)

@Anonymous
I never try to be smug. This was a true story about the reactions to our diet and the recipes we make. I post these to be helpful. I get emails asking for posts on how I work out and what I eat. I never mean to come off smug.

My writing/grammar could use improvement. I never claimed to be good at that. I have people doing that for me for GG. I plan to work with smart and talented people. We're not going to be perfect but we're going to try our best.

Thanks for your feedback.

I rarely make comments, but I just wanted to applaud you for how you handled this situation. In NO WAY do you come off smug with these healthy posts. If the anonymous people don't like what they read then they don't have to read anymore. Congrats on living such a fit and healthy lifestyle. It's an inspiration to everyone. Keep up the amazing work and I can't wait to see what you bring with GG.

Husband and I have changed our diet a lot for the past year. We eat only whole grains, and very minimal starch and sugar (and when we indulge I mostly make my own desserts so I can control the butter and sugar) and we feel SO much better. Like more alert and more energetic and when we work out we can push it to the max and not feel like we are going to die. It's really life changing once you change the way you eat.

Will have to try out this recipe. It looks delish!

Also, to your anon comments - I can relate, it's hard not to ignore but you just have to. I recently got a comment about how I come off sounding "extraordinarily snobby" and I think that when people are insecure about things in their own life, they like to read into our blogs that we are rubbing it in their face when that is not our intention at all. I think you do a great job writing about being and staying healthy and love reading your blog for it! :)

firstly, this looks amazing. (& that's saying a lot since i don't really like broccoli)

secondly, i'm sorry you have to deal with people like this. you are totally handling it well & taking the high road (yay). you just gotta brush the dirt of your shoulder & keep on trucking.

this looks like a great recipe! I like when you post healthy recipes/recipes that are indicative of what you eat on a normal basis. If anything I find it irritating when skinny girls post only indulgent or dessert recipes because then i just wonder what the hell they do to counteract all that or if they are even eating it at all.

i also strive to eat healthy and when i cook it's definitely mainly healthy and i save my indulgences for things that are really worth the splurge

Taylor-

I have been following your blog for quite some time and I have to say it is my all-time favorite lifestyle blog I have ever read! Not only do you look amazing (which even in California takes work, haha) but you seem incredibly down to earth and thankful for the the opportunities that you have created from your dedication, drive, and passion. Also, being a person that has made a career out of writing and editing, I find that your blog is well written and largely free of errors. Don't worry about silly haters, even published books end up with a few typos, etc on a regular basis.

Keep up the good work - you are one of my daily inspirations and I am so excited to see Glitter Girl come to fruition!

@Ana thank you so much!! It's really tasty!

@Heather I've actually wondered that too. They must give a lot away to friends. I know I've done that. Thanks!

@Alexis Thank you! I really appreciate it. People don't know but I even send my posts to my Dad every night and he checks them and they still end up with style/grammar errors. Learning to deal with things like this is something I need to work hard at. I'm getting better. I'm not a photographer, writer, model, chef, or fitness trainer. I'm just a normal girl trying to share and inspire. So I really appreciate your feedback! Thanks!

I think i'm going to have to do this in a list:

1. thanks for standing up to those "anon" people - it's pure jealousy, otherwise why would they bother to comment!

2. i love that you send things to your dad for him to check - i did that throughout uni, & still get him to read stuff like job applications, it's good to have a fresh pair of eyes look over things!

3. People sometimes think i think too much about food (hmm, too much is never enough!), about the content, what I'm eating etc, but I just really enjoying coming up with new ideas & healthy alternatives, plus I love splurging on the odd cupcake, haha!

(if you get a chance, I just posted about my dinner here - organic salmon with wild rice, sage, walnuts & olives, yum!

PS i love your blog & overall style, keep it up!

This looks so yummy! I've been reading your blog for quite some time, but I haven't posted a comment until today. I also want to eat healthy as my parents follow the same eating habits as you. Now that I'm married to someone who didn't grow up that way, it's very difficult to try and incorporate healthy food like this. I'll have to visit your blog and make all of your recipes :)
