Moving On

I debated writing this post for a year now. This will be my final post on Sterling Style. Maybe I will want to start it up again someday, but for now I know it’s time to say goodbye to a blog I've loved. It’s hard for me to even write this since this blog has truly meant so much to me and changed my life in so many ways.
Four years ago I discovered Polyvore. I was immediately hooked on creating artsy fashion sets and would spend countless hours creating and connecting with the community. It was my first “blog.” From there, I soon discovered personal blogs and it opened my eyes to a brand new world. I remember frantically calling my parents and telling them all about it and feeling so excited about starting my own. It didn’t take me long to think of a name. I was always proud of my family name--Sterling. Since my blog would be mostly about fashion, I decided Sterling Style had a nice ring to it.
I’m always on the hunt for new inspiration and when I started this blog I used it as an inspiration board. I would post anything that caught my eye.  Then I got the itch to take my own photos and even began to take outfit pictures. I look back at many of them and cringe —so many outfits that we’re so not me. But I realize that style evolves and you must experiment to find what really resonates with you.
Those few years were so amazing for me. I got to learn about the online world, connect with so many amazing women and fellow bloggers, and work with incredible brands.  It made me realize that I wanted to do this full-time.
I agonized over how I would take blogging from a hobby to a full-time gig. I kept trying to envision Sterling Style 10, 20, 30 years in the future and I just couldn’t see it. I knew that I did not want to have the focus on me all the time. I was loosing interest in sharing my own outfits and taking pictures of everything (plus Instagram became that place for me). I also realized I was entering a new phase in my life. I was almost 30 and I while I still loved fashion, I knew that in the years to come I may not feel the urge to be photographed. I wanted to wear things because I loved them, not because they should be blogged. That’s when I came up with Glitter Guide.
I kept going back to the essence of blogging and why I was so eager to start my own. It was about being inspired and sharing those discoveries with others. I wanted to do that full-time. This reflected my long-time fantasy of working for a magazine. However, there were already so many sites out there that did something like this. I started to really research them and then realized that so much has already been done, but that doesn’t mean something isn’t worth doing. There is room for originality. I wanted a site that had a girlie/ feminine vibe. I wanted it to feel like getting welcome advice and tips from your best girlfriend. I went through many names before picking Glitter Guide. It’s a risky name—people think we’re just talking about glitter all day long. But, I’m a fan of alliterations and knew the content would be more important than the name. Thanks to the amazing support of Sterling Style readers, Glitter Guide had a successful launch. I’m forever thankful for that.
Now, four years later, I am doing this full-time. I absolutely love what I do. I’ve also learned how important it is to unplug and take time away from work and the online world. Life’s too short to let it fly by without taking time to really enjoy it. With the amount of time Glitter Guide requires, I feel it’s time to say goodbye to Sterling Style. I’m excited to see where the next four years will take me!
Thank you for your endless support. I wish you the best.

Revlon + Sterling Style: Metallic Eyes

Metallic colors are always stylish for the holidays, but this year they are totally hot! An easy way to rock the trend is with a pretty eye shadow. Revlon Luxurious Color™ Diamond Lust™ Eye Shadow in Celestial Silver is a beautiful metallic shade and really brightens the eyes. I kept the rest of my makeup light and natural, and finished with Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Pink Pearl. It's a great look for a holiday office party--natural with a little sparkle!

Revlon + Sterling Style: Statement Hairpiece

Statement hairpieces are a huge trend right now. I love how they instantly add pizzaz to any hairstyle. When Revlon asked me to try the trend, I immediately knew I wanted to try a sparkly headband with a retro '60s ponytail. It's super easy to achieve, and looks good a little messy. Just make sure to seriously tease your hair. To complete the look, add a cat eye with liquid liner and a pretty nude lip. I used Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in "Champagne on Ice." (Buy it here.)

Revlon + Sterling Style: Nail Stencil

enjoy working with Revlon testing out new trends. Since I'm totally challenged when it comes to painting my own nails, I decided to take a chance and try Revlon's easy to use nail stencil. I still didn't get my nails to look perfect and clean, but practice makes perfect, right?! I also played with the peek-a-boo braids, which are a easy way to change up your everyday hairstyle.

For my nails I used:

-Revlon Nail Art Stencil
-Revlon Top Speed™ Nail Enamel in "Forbidden" and "24k" as the stencil color

I'm giving away 10 Revlon Top Speed™ Nail Enamel in "Forbidden." Leave a comment with your email address and 10 winners will be chosen at random soon.

Finding Balance {In the Kitchen}

For the past few monthsI've been struggling to find balance in my life. I felt overly tired and burnt out on things I typically enjoy. I've stopped posting as often on this blog, and while it's sad for me to see it slowly become less relevant in my life, it's been opening up time to focus on other things. You may remember a time when I would share new recipes. The truth is, I've never been a great cook, and that brief exploration was cut short by budget and time constraints.

For the past month, I've actively tried to take more time out for myself. It's definitely a struggle to break away from my livelihood, but in order for me to grow as a business owner (and as a person), I need to have space from it.

One way I'm working on balance is by getting back in the kitchen. I approached it with trepidation, knowing that I'm practically a beginner. I ordered about 20 new cookbooks from Amazon (no joke) and started watching reruns of my favorite Barefoot Contessa episodes. I shut down the computer at 5pm (with the occasional setback), turn on Food Network, and clumsily cook a new recipe. The odd part is, I use to feel nervous in the kitchen, but now I find it relaxing. It's turning into an escape that I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to everyday.

Updates on Tumblr

I know I don't update this blog as often as I used to. Juggling work on this site and Glitter Guide has been difficult for me. I still have plans for Sterling Style for the time being, but since I can't update it as often I decided to update my Tumblr a lot more. It's much easier for me to share photos and inspiration on that site. So if you're a fan of Sterling Style please follow my Tumblr to see what I am loving and some personal photos!

Thanks! xo

Revlon + Sterling Style: The Burgundy Lip

A strong burgundy lip is popular for fall. I don't typically wear dark colored lipsticks, but I thought it would be fun to experiment with the trend. I used Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Black Cherry and paired it with Revlon® ColorStay™ Smoky Shadow Stick in Flare and Revlon® ColorStay Overtime™ Lengthening Mascara. The light purple eyeshadow worked surprisingly well with the deep burgundy lipstick. Next time, I plan to try it with a sleek pony for a clean, sophisticated look.

NYFW Outfit Inspiration

With New York Fashion Week around the corner, I'm on the hunt for outfit inspiration. This year I find myself gravitating towards simple chic style. I still love a colorful dress or mixing polka dots with snakeskin, but overall I like to dress clean and easy. The J. Crew look is one of my favorites right now.

Love Story

Parker Top (c/o) // J Brand Jeans (c/o) // Vintage Clutch // Rachel Zoe Wedges (c/o) // Stella & Dot bracelet (c/o) // Alexander McQueen Bracelet // Kate Spade Sunglasses

I'm a skinny jeans kind of gal. However, I've been looking to change things up. Once I tried these "Love Story" bell bottoms by J Brand I was sold. They elongate my legs and look great with fun summer tops and will transition easily into fall. I think I found my new favorite jeans!
